Peace Train - The Cat Stevens Story
Date: 10 August 2010 2010

Venue: Civic Centre

Tuesday 10th August 8:00pm

The name brings back a thousand memories – dark eyes, a winning voice and songs which the whole world sang along to. Back in the 70s Cat Stevens was the ultimate rock star. Talented, charismatic, with a seemingly endless succession of beautiful melodies streaming from his imagination, the one-time teen idol turned international singing star had everything. He sold more than 60 million albums, earned enough money to last several lifetimes, and enjoyed all the trappings of fame.

But he wanted more out of life. So at the height of his career he shocked the world by taking his last bow. The music stopped and Cat Stevens was no more.

Whatever became of the man who wrote Father and Son, Moon Shadow and Where do the Children Play? Why did he turn his back on the world?

PEACE TRAIN is a night of music and story-telling which will strike a chord deep inside the heart of anyone who longs for something more; A journey back in time, recreating the sights and sounds, seeking out the man in the music and telling the story behind the songs.

Then, of course, there is the music. Hear twenty-three hits sung with remarkable authenticity by one of Australia’s most exciting young artists Darren Coggan, backed by a high-energy band. From First Cut is the Deepest, to Remember The Days Of The Old School, Lady D’Arbanville, Sad Lisa and Peace Train, Darren Coggan traces the path of a man who never stopped wondering about how to make the world a better place.

PEACE TRAIN, the Cat Stevens Story has had audiences on their feet, cheering for more at every stop.

The Kransky Sisters
Date: 14/08/2010 2010

Venue: Civic Centre

Saturday 14th August 7:30pm

If you think you’ve heard it on the wireless, you’ve never heard it like this!

Fresh off the ship in their packed up Morris, after sell-out seasons in the U.K, and New Zealand, The Kransky Sisters are unloading their baggage and bringing to you, their hit show, "Heard It On The Wireless". Venturing far from the dusty curtained private world of their old family home in Esk, rural Queensland, Mourne, Eve, and their oddly reclusive, almost forgotten sibling, Dawn Kransky, bring you their darkly funny stories from across the countryside, and uniquely homespun versions of popular tunes heard on the old wireless. The combination of their strange behaviour, blinkered outlooks, superbly droll comic dialogue, and alluring downright hilarious brand of tune make for a night of sheer delight.

Due to the mysterious disappearance of tuba playing, Arva Kransky, who was last seen exchanging sheet music with a member of the Hornbell Military Marching Band, the Kransky Sisters have enlisted the assistance of their rarely visited, reclusive sister, Dawn Kransky, who has taken leave of her job as trolley librarian at the Esk Hospital to be with her Sisters.

Both Dawn and Arva Kransky studied the Tuba at Tafe Toowoomba with Arva preceding Dawn by two years. On her return, Dawn moved into as neighbour’s laundry, after discovering her three sisters had commandeered the house. Dawn has rarely performed before an audience, aside from the early years, when her sisters would play together as children at the Esk fairs while their mother sold, among other things, her tasty fudge.

Now, on an old 60’s reed keyboard, guitar, musical-saw, tuba, and cooking pot, these unworldly sisters offer their offbeat illuminations on what they hear on their wireless and see in the magazines. Their unusual musical act draws on naiveté, spinsterhood and the somewhat gothic existence that forms the world of three eccentric sisters. Every show throws up whole crowds of Kransky converts.

Witness the lilting harmonies and offbeat humour of the sisters as they accompany themselves on an old 60’s reed keyboard, Tuba, Musical-Saw, kitchen pot, toilet brush and fervently shaken, duelling tambourines. The Kransky Sisters cover songs from Nana Mouskouri, The Carpenters, SugaBabes and Pink, to Skyhooks, Steppenwolf, ACDC, Eurythmics and Talking Heads. The combination of their strange behaviour, blinkered outlooks, superbly droll comic dialogue, and alluring, downright hilarious brand of tune, all makes for a highly entertaining brew.

This close-knit family of unlikely entertainers and their odd-ball music have warmed many hearts after their hit show "We Don’t Have Husbands" received a coveted Best-of-Festival Barry Award Nomination, and won ‘The Age Critics’ Choice Award’ and the Melbourne Airport ‘Best Newcomer’ Award at Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2004. Following that the show earned them A Green Room award, an Australian Entertainment Mo Award, and most recently, their latest Show "Heard It On The Wireless" earned them a Bank Of Scotland Herald Angel Award for excellence, in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2006.

If only you’d had the courage to visit those weird old aunts of yours years ago, you wouldn’t have had to wait until now to experience some of the joy The Kransky Sisters have to offer - a night of music and comic performance so tuned out, its tuned in! An absolute must see! This is rare, exciting, whimsical, warm and wonderfully polished entertainment, well worth your visit!

The Kransky’s are also known from their regular appearances on SBS’s In Siberia Tonight (2004, 2005), where they charmed and delighted audiences with their own unique brand of humour. In 2005, they also appeared on Spicks and Specs with Adam Hills, playing their intriguing, highly individual version of Highway To Hell. Most recently, the Kransky Sisters appeared on the BBC series, "Comedy Shuffle"

The Kransky Sisters feature the enigmatic talents of Annie Lee, Christine Johnston and Carolyn Johns, as Mourne, Eve and Dawn Kransky, three oddball spinsters from rural Queensland who draw a cult following wherever they go.

Captive Wives explores the lives, challenges and triumphs of a group of women living on Esperance farms in the early 1970s.

During February this year Perth playwright/actor/director Jenny Davis spent time interviewing local women about their experiences and exploring what led to the formation of the group, The Captive Wives.
The resulting play is a dramatic, humorous and insightful look at this remarkable group of women dealing with the issues of being new-land farmers – isolation, financial pressures, poor seasons… and snakes!
Captive Wives will be at the Bijou Theatre for a two-week season which runs from August 20-28. Tickets can be obtained from the Esperance Civic Centre or online at thebijoutheatre.org.au.

Standard tickets $16 each

For 4-10 year olds and their families.

Step into a world of pirates, princesses, demons and giants as Tashi tells of his amazing adventures in his old country. Based on Anna Fienberg's ever popular book series for emerging readers, the four Imaginary performers bring alive these exciting stories featuring wild and colourful characters such as the Wicked Baron, Chintu the Giant, the Warlord, Princess Sarashina, as well as a host of others including dragons, swans, and tigers. Imaginary Theatre combine elements of storytelling, object theatre, dramatic play and physical theatre, with imaginative design, sound and lighting to create a truly magical theatre experience.

Over 20,000 children, parents and carers have thrilled to these original theatre works since they were first developed as a QUT student theatre project for the 2004 Out of the Box Festival and with repeat seasons at Brisbane Powerhouse (2005) and at South Korea's Seoul International Picture Book Festival 2005. In 2006 Imaginary Theatre was founded, and since then TASHI has been produced professionally at the 2006 Out Of The Box Festival and seven 'Powerkidz' festivals at Brisbane Powerhouse. Features two extraordinarily talented West African acts, Muhanamwe and One Africa.

Kultour is pleased to present Mandinka Sound, a national tour of music, dance and song that will take audiences on a journey tracing West African culture in contemporary Australia back to its roots in the ancient Mandinka empire of West Africa. The tour also includes high-energy drumming, song and dance workshops for all ages at selected venues.

The show begins with a warm and intimate acoustic set from One Africa which brings together two of Melbourne's most loved West African performers, King Marong and Lamine Sonko. A subtle fusion of traditional West African culture and contemporary Australian influences, One Africa creates a hypnotically soulful repertoire of original songs. Providing the rhythm and groove, King Marong has built a reputation as a master of many African drumming styles and instruments. Providing vocals and guitar, Lamine hails from a famous Senegalese griot musical family and has performed internationally alongside such greats as Youssou Ndour and Fatou Nguewel Diouf.

MuhanamwÈ then take the stage with an electrifying set of traditional Guinean music and dance. MuhanamwÈ, meaning culture, has emerged from the dense and vibrant undergrowth of Melbourneís world music scene as one of the freshest and most exciting West African percussion and dance ensembles. With compelling rhythms, raw vocal harmonies, rippling balafon melodies, stunning costumes and superhuman dance moves, Muhanamwe not only draws from its deep roots in West Africa but also updates and brings new life to an ancient musical and cultural tradition.
